1 John 4:7-21
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19 We love him, because he first loved us.
20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

Love... what an awesome topic. The bible speaks a lot about love. Some verses speak on God's love. Some verses speak on the love that we should have for one another. Some verses offer warnings about love stating that you can have anything at all but if you don't have love, you are nothing.
Why is love so important. Verse 8 above covers it really simply. God is love. If God is love and we claim to love God, and we want to serve him and be like him, and we want so badly to know him... Well, I think we need to take a close look at this topic of love. It is quite important.

Verse 7 states that love is of God. Therefore if anyone loves, they are of God and know God.
Verse 8 says that anyone who doesn't love does not love God and does not know God...
for God IS love.
Makes sense. If we cannot love, how can we claim to know God? There is no better example of what love is than God. And God is more than just an example of love, He IS love.
We cannot know love if we do not know God, and we cannot know God if we do not love.

Verses 9-11 talk about God's love for us... Love to God, the love He has for us is not simply a feeling... it is/was an action. Love IS just as God is. And if God loves us that much, shouldn't we show our love, and/or His love to all those that God created and loves? I mean, God didn't just have His son die for you and me did He? You see a drug dealer on the street... Did God not send His son to die for that man also? Think about that.

Verse 12 starts out mentioning how no man has seen God... nobody on this planet has seen God's face in person. Right? Technically speaking, yes that is right. But let's read on. The rest of verse 12 says that if we love one another, then God dwells in us. God lives in us! Awesome isn't it... and His love is perfected in us. wow...
God has given us His spirit... He dwells in us, and we in Him.
I just love how verse 16 once again mentions that God IS love... and that anyone who dwells in love dwells in God, and God in him.

Love sure is sounding pretty important to me right now.
Verse 18 mentions something interesting about love. It states that there is no fear in love. True love casts out all fear. Interesting if you ask me. I'm going to be honest with you, I think I might want to study on that a bit more. That part has my attention right now. I think from time to time we all have fears. This verse says that true love casts out all fears. And he that feareth is not made perfect in love.
Anyway, I thought that interesting but I'm not going to hang on that topic right now. Back to the rest of the passage.
Verse 19 states that we love God because He first loved us. That makes sense. We wouldn't be capable of real love if it were not for His love for us.
Verse 20 states that if anyone claims that they love God, but hates their brother, they are a liar. Wow, that's kind of a powerful accusation isn't it? Well... let's take a look at some things briefly here. Who is more deserving of love? Our brother or ourselves? Oh, your brother has done this, or that? Oh that's horrible. But wait a minute... How many times in your life have you hurt God? How many times have your turned from Him? How many times have your broken a commandment? Think of our lives for a moment. All of us...
As Jesus said to the crowd, he who is without sin cast the first stone... We're all quite far from perfect. According to God's word, we all deserve death. The wages of sin is death...
So, guess what... your brother, or friend, or spouse, or parent, etc... God died for them as well. He loves them JUST as much as He loves you. Can that really be? Oh yeah... definitely.
While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. ALL of us. So, if we hate someone out there... anyone... then God's love is not truly in us. and if His love is not in us, then He is not truly in us, and we're not truly in Him.
Love... VERY powerful, VERY important...
Oh yeah, back to verse 20... It ends by saying How can we claim to love God whom we have not seen if we do not love our brother whom we have seen...
Verse 21 goes on to say that he who loves God loves his brother also.

LOTS of verses about love in the bible. Some even say to love our enemies... love those that hate us.
Is that really possible? Well, look through this passage again and think about it. God's love is perfect. God is love. If we love God and we accept His love for us, then we should be able to share that amazing love with the world. That love should be bursting out of us on all that we meet. We should be overflowing with love. And yes, that includes those that hate us.

There's a song by Michael W. Smith that says that love is not love until you give it away. So I challenge you, when you think about how you love everyone... Do we really? Is it just this simple feeling that we have inside that deep down we truly care for everyone? Or is it something we put into action? Do we put love into action and SHOW it to the world?
Well, I don't know about you but I think this passage is important to study and meditate one. I think it's something we really need to be sure of. Are we loving others as Christ loved us?

Father God, I thank you for your love. I thank you for the perfect example you have given us. I thank you for loving us even when we weren't deserving. I ask that you would open our hearts and our eyes and show us where we need to be showing love to others. Help us to forgive one another. Help us to understand your love and what it means to love others. I pray that we might be a light to the world. That people would see you and your love when they see us.

Hi Mill
i am sorry you found my last post offensive and had to remove it.
I was not talking about you personally. It was a general observation about the topic of Biblical love. I thought that we were supposed to be able to discuss the devotion here in forum fashion.
I on;y said something regarding your situation because it was something you had previously mentioned in your post. It is not meant to hurt your feelings. I really don't know you personally so I don't know if I overstepped the bouneries.
I may not have sounded compassionate towards you and for that I apologize. But i am no longer bound by my abuser and i have to learn to pick my words and phrases a little more carefully.
So then , set me straight, you do not want us to discuss these Biblical weekly studies that you post? Are you just blogging?
I will respect your decision.

Hi Katie...
I'm going to send another pm in a minute or so here... It is really hard to understand a person online sometimes. It can be easy to take things the wrong way. I'll respond to the things in private that I didn't think needed to be here. But, the rest of what you posted first, I might have taken some of it the wrong way, and I'll respond to it as best I can here now.
Just because you love someone does not mean you let them continue living in their sin with no accountability.
Setting bounderies is love. Even Christian men/women have God's love and still do bad things. but when they pass on and have not taken God's Word and lived it He will still have to turn them away from Heaven because He will say you said you knew me but you really did not know Me. You should have not been lukewarm for Me. Now I must turn you away. How sad. Not everyone who cries "Lord didn't I do this or that for you!" And He will say No what you did in my name was for yourself or to make yourself look and feel good for an audience.
I'm not entirely sure how all of that applied to this discussion but it does make sense.
The first sentence I put in bold because I felt it was the most relevant to this topic. And you are right in that statement. I hope I didn't say anything in my post that applied otherwise. We are to love our enemies... those that persecute, or whatever. But you are right, that does not mean that we let them treat us like a doormat or something. Some people, such as yourself, often find themselves in a really tough situation where it's hard to see where the line is when it comes to loving someone that doesn't treat you right. That is not an easy thing for anyone to deal with, and I'm sorry you ever had to face that. You are right though, that you can love that person without putting up with such things.
Counceling has been good. I find I have some insights that I did not know I had. i am no longer afraid to speak my mind. I am a Child of a king and I will not lived abused any more.
I am very glad that counseling is helping you so much. I have prayed for your situation and I am glad things are changing for you.
I thought that we were supposed to be able to discuss the devotion here in forum fashion.
you do not want us to discuss these Biblical weekly studies that you post?
You are right, that we are to be able to discuss things. I think I took some of your comments as more of an argument and an attack then a discussion, and I'm sorry for that.
I'm not a fan of blogging really. I think discussions are good, and it's definitely the purpose here. So discuss away. :D
